What is "bleed", and why does it matter?

This is the most common setup mistake. Here's what it means in 30 seconds.

Think of it like a photo frame: if the cut is 1mm off, you'd see a thin strip of bare paper at the edge. Bleed prevents that. Your background colour or image extends a little beyond the cut line, so even if the cut drifts slightly, it still looks clean.

The recommended AI-to-print workflow

Generate your image with AI → bring it into Canva for bleed and export. Simplest path for most customers.

1. Generate your image with the AI tool of your choice

   Use the prompts below to get print-friendly output. Key tips: ask for no text in the image (AI text is unreliable), match the aspect ratio to your print size, and request high detail, edge-to-edge composition.

2. Download the highest resolution version available

   Always grab the largest file size the tool offers. Adobe Firefly outputs much higher resolution than most other tools.

3. Import into Canva and set up for print

   Upload the AI image to Canva, create a canvas at your print size, place the image to fill the canvas, enable bleed guides, then export as PDF Print with crop marks. Follow the Canva guide above.

4. Add your text and logo in Canva, not in the AI tool

   Don't rely on AI to generate readable text, it's almost always garbled. Add all text and logos manually in Canva so they're sharp and accurate.

In Photoshop, open your image. Select the empty canvas area outside the image edge using the Marquee tool. Then go to Edit → Generative Fill and use this prompt:

"Extend the background naturally, matching the existing colours, texture, and lighting. No new subjects or objects, background extension only, same mood."

This is the best way to add bleed to an image that's the right size but has no bleed area.

No text. Full composition filling the entire frame. Suitable for print backgrounds.

1. Click the generated image to place it on your canvas.
2. Drag the corners to fill the entire canvas, make sure it extends to (or beyond) the bleed guide lines.
3. Add your text, logo, and other elements on top.
4. Export as PDF Print with "Crop marks and bleed" ticked.

What we need from your file

These apply to every job, regardless of what tool you used.

Quick Pre-Send Checklist

Run through this before uploading or emailing your file.

• File is a PDF (or accepted format) PDF Print from Canva, or press-ready PDF from Illustrator / InDesign / Photoshop. Not PNG.
• Bleed is included 1/8" for business cards, flyers, posters. 1/4" for banners, signs, large format. Canva users: "Crop marks and bleed" was ticked at export.
• Important content is inside the safe zone Text, logos, and faces are at least 1/8" inside the trim line, not right at the cut edge.
• Resolution is adequate 300 DPI for small format. At least 100 DPI at final print size for large format.
• White elements look correct If you have white text or logos on a dark background, zoom in and confirm they are visible and set to Normal blend mode (not Multiply or Overlay).
• File is named clearly Something like: CompanyName_Flyer_8.5x11_v2.pdf, include the product and size.
• Order reference included when sending Your reference number, or your name and the product ordered, in the email subject.
