This is the most common setup mistake. Here's what it means in 30 seconds.
Think of it like a photo frame: if the cut is 1mm off, you'd see a thin strip of bare paper at the edge. Bleed prevents that. Your background colour or image extends a little beyond the cut line, so even if the cut drifts slightly, it still looks clean.
Add 0.125 inches bleed on all four sides.
Add 0.25 inches bleed on all four sides.
Free or Pro, here's the complete guide from setup to export.
Go to Create a design β Custom size. Enter the final dimensions you want printed, e.g. Business Card = 3.5" Γ 2", Banner = 24" Γ 36". Do not add bleed here, Canva handles that separately.
Click File β Settings and enable both "Show Margins" and "Show Print Bleeds." You'll see a pink dashed line (bleed) and a lighter dashed line (safe zone). Keep all important content, text, logos, faces, inside the safe zone.
Make sure background colours and images stretch all the way to (or beyond) the outer bleed line. Nothing that bleeds off the edge should stop at the trim line, extend it into the bleed zone.
This is critical. Do not choose PDF Standard or PNG, those don't include bleed.
This adds the 1/8" bleed and marks our equipment uses to cut correctly.
Merges all layers so fonts, effects, and transparencies all print correctly.
CMYK ensures printed colours are as close as possible to what you see on screen. Free users: leave it as RGB, we'll handle the conversion.
Made your design with ChatGPT, Midjourney, Firefly, or Canva AI? Here's how to make it print-ready.
Generate your image with AI β bring it into Canva for bleed and export. Simplest path for most customers.
Use the prompts below to get print-friendly output. Key tips: ask for no text in the image (AI text is unreliable), match the aspect ratio to your print size, and request high detail, edge-to-edge composition.
Always grab the largest file size the tool offers. Adobe Firefly outputs much higher resolution than most other tools.
Upload the AI image to Canva, create a canvas at your print size, place the image to fill the canvas, enable bleed guides, then export as PDF Print with crop marks. Follow the Canva guide above.
Don't rely on AI to generate readable text, it's almost always garbled. Add all text and logos manually in Canva so they're sharp and accurate.
Copy the prompt for your tool, fill in the [brackets], and generate.
Works in ChatGPT (free or Plus). Always specify your aspect ratio and brand colours in the brackets.

Suitable for commercial printing at high resolution, clean sharp edges, no harsh vignettes near borders. Aspect ratio: [e.g. 16:9 for horizontal banner, 2:3 for poster, 1:1 for square]
Design a professional print-ready background for a [business card / flyer / brochure cover] for a [industry, law firm, dental clinic, tech startup, etc.]. Style: [corporate and clean / friendly and approachable]. Colours: [your brand colours]. No text. No logos. No watermarks. Background extends edge-to-edge with no white borders. High detail, suitable for 300 DPI commercial printing.
Create a wide-format banner background for a [event / trade show / storefront] for [business type]. Orientation: horizontal landscape. Aspect ratio: [e.g. 3:1 for a standard banner]. Style: [bold and eye-catching / elegant and minimal / fun and colourful]. Colours: [your colours]. No text. Left and right edges should have a simple, bleed-safe design, avoid critical imagery right at the edges as they may be trimmed. High resolution, edge-to-edge coverage.
Use in Midjourney via Discord or midjourney.com. The --ar flag sets the aspect ratio, match it to your print proportions.
/imagine [describe your concept] for a [business type] printed . Style: [vibrant / bold / commercial photography / illustration]. Colour palette: [your colours]. No text, no words, no logos. Edge-to-edge composition. Print-ready high detail. --ar [e.g. 16:9 or 2:3 or 1:1] --q 2 --v 6

/imagine [your concept] business card background, [style description], colour palette [your colours], minimal and professional, no text, clean crisp design, suitable for offset print --ar 7:4 --q 2 --v 6
Use at firefly.adobe.com or inside Photoshop. Firefly outputs higher resolution than most other AI tools, making it the best choice for small format print.
[Describe your scene or concept]. Style: [commercial photography / digital illustration / watercolour / bold graphic]. Colours: [your brand colours]. No text or lettering. Full-bleed composition, design extends to all edges. Suitable for commercial print use. High detail and sharpness.
In Photoshop, open your image. Select the empty canvas area outside the image edge using the Marquee tool. Then go to Edit β Generative Fill and use this prompt: "Extend the background naturally, matching the existing colours, texture, and lighting. No new subjects or objects, background extension only, same mood." This is the best way to add bleed to an image that's the right size but has no bleed area.
Use inside Canva's editor via Apps β Magic Media. The advantage: you stay in Canva, so setting up bleed and exporting is seamless.
[Describe your concept, e.g. "a cozy cafΓ© interior with warm lighting and wooden tables"]. Style: [photorealistic / flat illustration / watercolour / bold graphic]. Colours: [your brand colours, e.g. "earthy browns, cream, and burnt orange"]. No text. Full composition filling the entire frame. Suitable for print backgrounds.
1. Click the generated image to place it on your canvas. 2. Drag the corners to fill the entire canvas, make sure it extends to (or beyond) the bleed guide lines. 3. Add your text, logo, and other elements on top. 4. Export as PDF Print with "Crop marks and bleed" ticked.

Set your artboard to the finished print size. Go to File β Document Setup and set bleed to 0.125" (small format) or 0.25" (large format) on all sides. Export: File β Save As β PDF β Marks & Bleeds β Use Document Bleed Settings + Trim Marks. Convert all fonts to outlines (Type β Create Outlines) before exporting.
Create your canvas at finished size plus bleed already included (e.g. 8.5"Γ11" flyer with 1/8" bleed β canvas = 8.75"Γ11.25"). Set resolution to 300 DPI for small format, or 100β150 DPI at final size for large format. Flatten all layers before exporting as PDF or TIFF.
Set bleed in File β Document Setup β Bleed. Package your file (File β Package) to collect all linked images and fonts, then export as PDF with Marks and Bleeds β Use Document Bleed Settings. Embed all images before final export.
Set page size to finished dimensions. Add bleed in File β Document Properties β Bleed. Export as PDF with bleed and crop marks enabled. Convert all fonts to curves before exporting.
Set bleed in Document Setup β Bleed. Export as PDF using the PDF (for print) preset. Enable "Include bleed" and "Include crop marks" in the export dialog. Convert fonts to curves under Type β Convert to Curves.
Large format jobs need 1/4" (0.25") bleed on all sides. Set this manually in Document Setup if your software allows. For very large files (over 20MB), use a download link (WeTransfer, Dropbox) rather than email. Resolution at final print size: minimum 100 DPI, ideally 150 DPI.
Cut vinyl jobs require vector artwork. Photos and raster images cannot be used for cutting. Your file needs clean, closed vector paths that tell the cutter exactly where to cut.
Cut path setup:
Minimum sizes for clean weeding:
Best file formats: AI, EPS, or PDF with vector paths intact. SVG is also accepted. Do not flatten to raster before sending.
Not sure? Send us your original vector file and let us know it is a cut job. We will set up the cut path and confirm before production.
These apply to every job, regardless of what tool you used.
| Requirement | What it means | If you don't have it |
|---|---|---|
| PDF format | Press-ready PDF is preferred. We also accept JPG, TIFF, AI, EPS, PSD, INDD, SVG. | β PNG is web-only, not ideal for print. |
| Bleed | 1/8" for small format. 1/4" for large format. Background extends beyond the cut line. | β File may be returned or a setup fee charged. |
| Resolution | 300 DPI for small format at print size. 100β150 DPI for large format at print size. | We offer AI upscaling, ask us. |
| Colour mode | CMYK preferred. RGB is accepted but colours may shift slightly when converted. | We convert at no charge, flag it if brand colour accuracy matters. |
| Fonts | Embed all fonts, or convert text to outlines/curves before exporting. | β Text may reflow or substitute at print. |
| Images embedded | All placed/linked images must be embedded in the file, not just linked. | β Missing images print as blank boxes. |
| No white overprint | White objects set to "Overprint" disappear at print. Check Attributes in Illustrator. | β White text/logos on dark backgrounds become invisible. |
| Rich black for large areas | For large black fills, use 40C / 10M / 10Y / 100K. For small text, use 100K only. | 100% K text is fine, rich black on small text looks blurry. |
